Other Program Activities
Big Brothers Big Sisters also runs programs which aim to bring friendship and fellowship to young people waiting for a match or those who perhaps need to feel more comfortable with the organisation prior to taking on the commitment to a match. Some examples of these programs are:
One Off Activity Days
-
These are based around a specific activity and usually include matched and unmatched young people and volunteers. The aim is for young people to engage in a fun activity and enjoy it with adult company.
Go Girls!
-
Specifically designed for preteen girls, this 5 to 7 week program is led by volunteer mentors and provides an opportunity for girls to engage in fun activities while reflecting on issues such as participation in physical activities, healthy eating choices, self image and relationships.
These activities provide an opportunity for young people and volunteers to participate in Big Brothers Big Sisters activities even though they may not have yet had the opportunity of a match. Often, through these activities, a natural friendship may develop and ultimately result in a formal match.
